Surgical Experience at the Hospital of Saint Raphael

Actual weight loss of individuals after weight loss procedures depends on several factors.  These include age, overall health status, preoperative weight, ability to exercise, type of procedure and commitment to making dietary and lifestyle changes.

Here are our current results:
Gastric Bypass Surgery
LapBand Surgery
Mortality Rate:
Obesity surgery can result in operative complications and even death. Nationwide, the rate of loss of life from gastric bypass surgery is 1 in 200. In the years 2001-2006, 2542 bariatric surgeries were performed at the Hospital of Saint Raphael with an in-hospital mortality rate of 1 in 1000.

Risks of complication and death are reduced when surgery is performed by an experienced bariatric surgeon at a center that does a large number of procedures.  In addition, patients at the Center for Obesity Surgery at the Hospital of Saint Raphael receive thorough preoperative risk evaluation, including cardiac and pulmonary assessment. Close follow-up after surgery in both the inpatient and outpatient settings leads to early identification of postoperative problems and reduction of risk of mortality as well.
